Application
1). Eco-solvent: widely used in coatings, inks, resins and adhesives, replacing traditional volatile organic solvents (such as toluene, acetone), in line with the requirements of green chemistry.
2). Electronic cleaner: used to remove grease and flux residue on the surface of electronic components, non-corrosive to metals and plastics.
3). Food additives: used as food grade solvents or flavor carriers (need to comply with FDA and other regulations), provide a slight fruity flavor, used in confectionery, beverages and bakery products.
4). Cosmetics & Fragrances: Used as a solvent or fragrance fixative in perfumes and skin care products to blend mild fragrances.
5). Pharmaceutical synthesis: as chiral intermediates (L-configuration) involved in the synthesis of antibiotics, antiviral drugs and vitamins.
6). Biodegradable materials: used in the production or modification of degradable plastics such as polylactic acid (PLA).
7). Ester exchange reaction: Synthesis of other high value-added lactic acid ester derivatives (e.g. methyl lactate, butyl lactate).
Storage
1). Temperature: store in a cool place, recommended temperature range 15-25°C, avoid high temperatures (>40°C).
2). Humidity: Keep dry, relative humidity below 60%, prevent hygroscopic hydrolysis.
3). Protection from light: need to be sealed in an opaque container (e.g. brown glass bottle or HDPE pail).
4). Keep away from ignition source: flash point is about 53°C, it is a flammable liquid, need to be fireproof and anti-static.
5). Isolate from oxidizing agents: avoid contact with strong acids, strong bases, peroxides.
6). Recommended stainless steel, glass or chemical-resistant plastics (such as HDPE, PP).
Stability
1). HYDROLYSIS: Susceptible to hydrolysis to lactic acid and ethanol under strong acidic/alkaline conditions or high temperatures (>80°C).
2). Oxidation: may decompose on exposure to oxygen or oxidizing agents to produce aldehydes or acidic by-products.
3). VOLATILITY: Boiling point 154°C, low volatility at room temperature, but need to be kept sealed.
4). Hygroscopicity: low hygroscopicity, but long-term humid environment may trigger slow hydrolysis.
5). Toxicity: low toxicity, but slightly irritating to eyes and respiratory tract, need to be worn when operating 6). Degradability: biodegradable, low risk of environmental residues.
