Application
1). Food grade application: as a highly effective bacteriostatic agent (E280), it is widely used in bakery products, dairy products (e.g. cheese), cereal products to inhibit molds, aerobic bacilli and some Gram-negative bacteria.
2). Feed additives: the main use worldwide (share of about 50%). Add to silage and compound feed to prevent mold, prolong storage period and improve animal feed safety.
3). Synthesis of propionate salt/ester: production of calcium propionate (food preservative), sodium propionate (feed mold inhibitor), cellulose propionate (plastics, coatings), vinyl propionate (adhesive monomer) and so on.
4). Pesticide synthesis: used as raw material for herbicides (such as quinclorac derivative of propionic acid), fungicides (such as propiconazole).
5). Pharmaceutical synthesis: involved in the production of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen, naproxen) and some vitamins (such as vitamin B6).
6). Solvent and extraction agent: dissolve natural resin, cellulose derivatives, used in paint, ink, spice industry.
7). Rubber vulcanization retardant: control the vulcanization process, improve the performance of rubber products.
8). Electroplating additives: adjust the pH value of electroplating solution, enhance the uniformity of plating layer.
9). Antiseptic for cosmetics: used in skin care products to inhibit microorganisms at a compliant concentration (subject to cosmetic regulations in various countries).
10). Laboratory reagent: as analytical reagent or raw material for organic synthesis.
Storage
1). Corrosion-resistant containers are required: such as stainless steel (type 304/316), polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) material tanks, prohibit aluminum, copper, zinc and other easily corroded metals.
2). Sealed design to prevent moisture absorption or volatilization.
3). TEMPERATURE: Store in a cool and ventilated place, recommended temperature 15-25°C. Avoid high temperatures (>40°C) to prevent vapour build-up; frost protection is required in winter (freezing point -21°C, but low temperatures may cause crystallization).
4). Humidity: maintain a dry environment with relative humidity <60%, avoid contact with water to generate corrosive solutions.
5). Isolation measures: keep away from oxidizing agents (such as nitrates, peroxides), strong bases, reducing agents and food materials, and store in separate areas.
6). Equipped with anti-leakage collection pool, anti-corrosive pump valves.
7). Install explosion-proof ventilation system and eyewash device in the operation area, and the operators wear acid-resistant gloves (butyl rubber) and goggles.
Stability
1). Stable at room temperature: it can be stored for a long time (>2 years) without deterioration under sealed and light-proof conditions.
2). High temperature risk: decompose slowly at >140°C, decompose violently at 440°C or more into carbon monoxide, acetaldehyde and hydrocarbons (fire and explosion prevention required).
3). When encountering strong oxidizing agents (such as concentrated nitric acid, potassium permanganate): violent oxidation reaction may occur, releasing toxic gases (CO₂, CO).
4). In case of strong alkali (e.g. sodium hydroxide): violent neutralization reaction, exothermic and produce propionate salt.
5). Metal corrosion: Strongly corrosive to metals such as iron and aluminum, aggravated by humid environment.
6). Light: long-term UV irradiation may promote trace decomposition, it is advisable to store away from light.
7). Risk of polymerization: does not self-polymerize under standard conditions, no polymerization reported.
8). Impurities: water or metal ion impurities may catalyze decomposition, need to control the purity of raw materials (industrial grade ≥99.5%).y mpact
