Application
1). Used in the preparation of valeric acid esters (e.g., ethyl valerate, benzyl valerate, etc.), which are commonly used as fragrances, solvents or plasticizers.
2). Used as intermediates in the synthesis of drugs, pesticides and other fine chemicals, such as the synthesis of certain sedatives and fungicides.
3). In the food industry, valeric acid and its salts (e.g., sodium valerate) can be used as a preservative to inhibit the growth of microorganisms and extend the shelf life of food.
4) Adding valeric acid to feed can be used as an animal growth promoter and improve intestinal health.
5). Valeric acid can be used as a solvent to dissolve resins, waxes and other substances in the paint and ink industry; its derivatives can also be used as a component of lubricants to enhance oil performance.
6). It is used in leather industry for leather treatment, or as auxiliary reagent in mineral processing.
Storage
1). Sealed storage: Store in airtight containers to prevent volatilization and contact with air.
2). Cool and ventilated: the storage temperature should be lower than 30℃, keep away from fire and heat sources, avoid direct sunlight (the storage area needs to comply with the management specification of flammable and explosive chemicals).
3) Isolated storage: Store separately from oxidizing agents, alkalis and reducing agents to avoid chemical reaction.
4). Adopt corrosion-resistant packaging materials (e.g. glass bottles, plastic drums or metal drums) to ensure that there is no leakage of packaging.
Stability
1). Stable at room temperature: In a dry, light-proof room temperature environment, valeric acid is more stable and less likely to decompose.
2). Avoid conditions: Decomposition may occur at high temperature (e.g. exceeding its boiling point 186°C); oxidation reaction is easy to occur when in contact with strong oxidizing agents (e.g. potassium permanganate, hydrogen peroxide); reaction with alkali (e.g. sodium hydroxide) to produce valeric acid.
3). Flammability: valeric acid is flammable liquid, the vapor mixed with air can form explosive mixture, easy to burn and explode when exposed to open flame and high heat, need to keep away from fire source.
4). Corrosiveness: irritating to skin and mucous membrane, may cause redness, swelling and pain after contact, protective gloves, goggles and other protective equipment should be worn during operation.
5). Toxicity: low toxicity, inhalation of high concentration of vapor or accidental ingestion may cause respiratory tract irritation, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms, need to follow safe operating procedures.
