Application
1). Used as a solvent for acetic acid fibers and also in the fragrance industry .
2). Used as food flavoring agent, wine flavoring agent, pharmaceutical intermediates.
3). Commonly used in the modulation of fruity, frankincense-type edible and wine flavors.
4). The product is a high-level solvent for artificial pearls.
5). Ethyl lactate has a wine flavor aroma. It is used to formulate wine flavor and edible flavor.
Storage
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Storage must be away from oxidizing agents.
Stability
1). It is flammable and should be kept away from fire source and strong oxidant. In case of fire, use carbon dioxide, carbon tetrachloride and powder fire extinguishing agent to extinguish the fire. It is not suitable to use water, and it is non-corrosive to iron, soft steel and aluminium containers, but the lactic acid generated by hydrolysis is corrosive to copper.
2). Chemical properties: ethyl lactate is soluble in water, but it can be decomposed by water, and the speed of hydrolysis is slower than that of methyl lactate. Lactic acid and ethanol are free from ethyl lactate containing water when heated. Ethyl lactate contains asymmetric carbon atoms and therefore has two optical isomers. Bimolecular condensation occurs during storage in a vacuum desiccator to form propionate. Dehydrogenation of ethyl lactate occurs to produce ethyl pyruvate by heating to 200-300°C in the presence of a catalyst or by oxidation with air while in the presence of light. Ethyl pyruvate is also produced when the vapour of ethyl lactate is passed through heated phosphorus pentoxide together with oxygen.
3). Ethyl lactate undergoes pyrolysis on heating to form acetaldehyde, carbon monoxide and ethanol. Heating in the presence of ammonia forms lactic acid amide and ethanol. Condensation in the presence of sulphuric acid produces polymer compounds.
