Application
1). Chiral Synthesis and Pharmaceutics
Used in the preparation of drug intermediates with specific D-configurations (e.g., certain antibiotics or antitumor drugs), whose chiral structure may affect the activity or metabolic pathway of the drug.
As chiral inducers or building blocks in asymmetric catalytic reactions.
2). Polymer modification
Copolymerization with L-lactic acid methyl ester to modulate the crystallinity, thermal stability or degradation rate of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) materials, extending their applications in biomedical materials (e.g., surgical sutures, slow-release carriers).
For synthesizing polymer materials with special optical properties (e.g. liquid crystal materials).
3). Chemical research and analysis
As chiral standards or derivatization reagents in chromatographic analysis, for enantiomeric purity testing or stereochemical studies.
As solvents or auxiliaries for specific reactions in organic synthesis (e.g. ester exchange reactions).
4). Food and flavor industry
As a solvent or flavor carrier in food processing (subject to regulatory requirements such as FDA or EFSA), but its application is more limited than that of the L-type due to the possible production of toxic intermediates by D-lactic acid in certain metabolic pathways.
Storage
1). Sealing and Moisture Protection
Use airtight containers (e.g. glass or corrosion-resistant metal) to avoid moisture absorption leading to hydrolysis. It is recommended that storage be filled with an inert gas (e.g., nitrogen).
Place desiccant (e.g. molecular sieve or silica gel) inside the container and check the humidity regularly.
2). Environmental conditions
Storage temperature should be controlled at 2-8°C (long term storage) or below 25°C (short term use) to avoid high temperature accelerated decomposition.
Store away from light (brown bottle or dark place) to prevent UV rays from triggering oxidation or photolysis reaction.
3). Isolation Requirements
Separate from strong oxidizing agents (e.g. persulfates), strong acids/bases to prevent violent reactions.
Keep away from ignition source and static environment, because methanol (hydrolysis product) is flammable.
Stability
1). Chemical Stability
Hydrolysis sensitivity: similar to L-type, rapidly hydrolyzed to produce D-lactic acid and methanol when exposed to water or moisture, need to be strictly protected from moisture (the rate of hydrolysis may be slightly different due to differences in the three-dimensional structure).
Thermal Stability: Ester bond breakage or oxidation occurs easily when it is higher than 40℃, resulting in deepening of color (yellowing) or increase of acid value.
Oxidation risk: may slowly oxidize when exposed to air for a long period of time, it is recommended to store in nitrogen and add antioxidants (e.g. BHT).
2). Shelf life and testing
Shelf life is usually 12-18 months (when stored ideally) under unopened conditions.
Regularly test for acidity, spin and appearance (turbidity or precipitation indicates hydrolysis or impurity formation).
3). Safety Precautions
Methanol toxicity: Methanol from hydrolysis should be strictly prevented from inhalation or skin contact, and protective equipment (goggles, gas mask) should be worn during operation.
Disposal: It should be recycled through professional chemical waste to avoid environmental pollution.
