Application
1). Antifreeze/Coolant: Widely used in automotive cooling systems and HVAC systems to prevent freezing and overheating due to its low freezing point (-13°C) and high boiling point (195°C) . A 60% EG-water mixture can withstand temperatures as low as -37°C .
2). Polyester Production: A key monomer in manufacturing polyethylene terephthalate (PET) for plastic bottles, textiles, and packaging materials, as well as polyester resins for coatings and composites .
3). Solvent and Humectant: Used in paints, inks, adhesives, and cosmetics (e.g., moisturizers) due to its hygroscopic nature and miscibility with water and organic solvents . It also acts as a solvent for dyes and pharmaceuticals .
4). Heat Transfer Fluids: Employed in industrial cooling processes, ice rinks, and solar thermal systems for its efficient heat transfer properties .
5). Deicing Agent: Utilized in aircraft deicing fluids and runway treatments to melt ice .
6). Hydraulic/Brake Fluids: Found in hydraulic systems and brake fluids due to its high viscosity and stability .
7). Semiconductor Industry: High-purity EG is used as a cooling medium and dehumidifying agent in semiconductor manufacturing to prevent moisture-related issues .
Storage
1). Conditions: Store in a cool (2–30°C), dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and ignition sources . Avoid temperatures exceeding 50°C to prevent decomposition .
2). Containers: Use tightly sealed, corrosion-resistant containers made of HDPE, polypropylene, or stainless steel. Avoid aluminum, as EG can corrode it under high-temperature or acidic conditions .
3). Handling: Keep containers upright to prevent leaks. Inhibited EG has an indefinite shelf life if stored properly, while uninhibited EG may oxidize over 2 years, leading to discoloration and increased acidity .
4). Compatibility: Isolate from strong oxidizers and acids, which can react violently .
Stability
1). Stable at room temperature in closed containers .
2). Degrades at high temperatures (>200°C), releasing toxic gases like carbon monoxide and formaldehyde .
3). Oxidizes slowly in air, forming glycolic acid, which can accelerate corrosion in metal systems .
