Application
1). Disinfectant: 75% ethanol solution is widely used to disinfect skin, instruments and environmental surfaces (by destroying microbial protein structures).
2). Pharmaceutical excipients: used as a solvent, preservative or extractant in pharmaceuticals, vaccines and tincture preparation.
3). Solvents: to dissolve resins, oils, fragrances, etc., used in paints, inks, cosmetics and detergents.
4). Fuel: as biofuel (ethanol gasoline) or laboratory alcohol lamp fuel.
5). Chemical synthesis: intermediate in the production of compounds such as acetaldehyde, acetic acid, ethyl ester.
6). Food additives: as preservatives, extractants or flavor carriers for alcohol, condiments and edible flavors.
7). Cosmetics: Used in perfumes, toners, etc., with both solvent and sterilization functions.
8). Antifreeze: mixes with water to lower the freezing point, used in automotive coolants or laboratory antifreeze.
9). Energy storage: hydrogen carrier or fuel additive for fuel cells.
Storage
1). Use stainless steel, glass, or ethanol-resistant plastic containers (e.g., HDPE), tightly sealed to prevent evaporation and moisture absorption.
2). Avoid using common plastics (e.g. PVC), ethanol may dissolve part of the plastic.
3). TEMPERATURE: Store in a cool place (15-25°C recommended), away from heat sources (flash point 12-14°C, flammable liquids).
4). Ventilation: keep well ventilated to avoid accumulation of vapors (vapors are heavier than air and tend to accumulate in low places).
5). Humidity: dry environment to prevent moisture absorption leading to concentration drop.
6). Fire and explosion prevention: open fire, sparks or static electricity are prohibited in the storage area, equipped with explosion-proof equipment and fire extinguishers (carbon dioxide or dry powder fire extinguishers are recommended).
7). Isolated storage: store separately from strong oxidizers (e.g. potassium permanganate, peroxides) and strong acids/alkalis to avoid violent reactions.
Stability
1). Stable at room temperature: it is not easy to decompose under closed conditions, but it will absorb moisture and slowly oxidize to form acetaldehyde and acetic acid when exposed to air for a long time.
2). Oxidation risk: contact with strong oxidizing agents may cause combustion or explosion (e.g. mixing with concentrated nitric acid reacts violently).
3). Flammability: very easy to burn under high temperature or open flame, the combustion products are carbon dioxide and water (incomplete combustion may generate carbon monoxide).
4). Decomposition temperature: high temperature (>400°C) may decompose to form ethylene and other gases.
5). Insensitive to light, no need to avoid light for routine storage, but long-term exposure to ultraviolet light may accelerate oxidation.
6). Pure ethanol can be stabilized for a long period of time (more than 2-3 years) under sealed conditions, but water-containing ethanol (e.g., medical alcohol) may change in concentration as a result of moisture absorption or evaporation, and regular testing is required.
