Application
1). Methyl formate is a key intermediate in carbon monochemistry, which can be hydrolyzed to produce formic acid and methanol, and can also be ammolated to prepare chemical products such as formamide and dimethylformamide (DMF).
2). As an excellent solvent for cellulose acetate and cellulose nitrate, methyl formate is widely used in coating and ink industry. Meanwhile, it can be used as a fumigant for tobacco, cereals and dried fruits with both bactericidal and insecticidal functions.
3). In the field of pesticides, it is a solvent for carbendazim insecticide and is used in the preparation of insecticides and fungicides.
4). Methyl formate is an important raw material for the synthesis of drugs such as the cough suppressant methadone and methyl pyrimidine sulfonate. Its aromatic properties also make it useful in the fragrance industry for the formulation of flavors with an etheric flavor.
Storage
1). It should be stored in a cool and ventilated special warehouse, with the temperature strictly controlled below 30°C, away from open flame, heat source and strong oxidizing agent.
2). The warehouse should be equipped with explosion-proof lighting and ventilation equipment, and it is forbidden to use mechanical equipment that is easy to generate sparks.
3). Packed in sealed metal or plastic containers, make sure the mouth of the drum is well sealed to prevent vapor leakage. The storage needs to be placed separately from alkalis and oxidizers to avoid reaction.
4). The storage area should be equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment and fire prevention materials, such as sand and soil, anti-soluble foam fire extinguishers.
5). Containers conforming to the standards for hazardous chemicals should be used during transportation to avoid high temperature, sunlight and collision. It should be lightly loaded and unloaded during transportation to prevent damage to the container.
Stability
1). Methyl formate is relatively stable at room temperature, but will burn violently when exposed to high heat (e.g., ignition temperature of 449°C) or open flame, releasing toxic gases such as carbon monoxide.
2). Its vapor mixed with air can form explosive mixtures, the explosion limit is 5.9%-28.7% (v/v), need to strictly control the concentration.
3). The substance is easily hydrolyzed in humid air to form formic acid and methanol, so the storage environment should be kept dry.
4). Contact with strong alkali will accelerate hydrolysis, and reaction with strong oxidizers may cause an explosion.
5). When stored for a long period of time, the sealing of the container should be checked regularly to avoid quality loss due to slow hydrolysis.
