Application
1). It is mainly used as a preservative for dairy products (e.g. cheese) to inhibit the growth of mold and bacteria. It is also an edible spice used to enhance the flavor of baked goods, meat products and fast food, giving a fruity aroma when diluted.
2). Pharmaceutical excipients: Caprylic acid is used as a stabilizer and bacteriostat in pharmaceutical preparations, for example, for solubilization and preservation of oral liquid preparations or capsules. The Chinese Pharmacopoeia clearly lists it as a medicinal excipient, and it is required to be stored in a closed and cool place.
3). Drug Synthesis: Used as an intermediate in the synthesis of anti-influenza drugs (e.g. ranimivir octanoate) and antifungal drugs.
4). Biocides: Caprylic acid is approved in the EU as a biocide active substance for use in specific disinfectant products.
5). Caprylic acid is a common emulsifier and surfactant in cosmetics and is used in creams, lotions, shampoos and other products to help stabilize formulations and improve skin feel. Its derivative, caprylic/capric triglyceride (GTCC), is also used as a skin conditioner and solvent.
6). Lubricants & Plasticizers: Used in the production of plastic plasticizers and metalworking lubricants to enhance the flexibility and aging resistance of materials.
7). Surfactants: used as raw materials for detergents and defoamers, for industrial cleaning and water treatment.
8). Other fields: used in dyestuff and spice synthesis, as well as ore flotation and antirust agent preparation.
Storage
1). It should be stored in a cool (15-25°C), dry and well-ventilated warehouse, avoiding direct sunlight and high temperature. Its melting point is about 16-17°C, it may solidify under low temperature, but it does not affect the quality, and it can be used normally after returning to room temperature.
2). Storage containers need to be made of corrosion-resistant materials, such as glass, polyethylene or stainless steel, avoiding metals such as iron and copper to prevent acid corrosion. Airtight containers can prevent volatilization and moisture intrusion to maintain product purity.
3). It needs to be stored separately from strong oxidizers, strong bases and reducing agents, and away from ignition sources and flammable materials. The storage area should be equipped with fire and explosion-proof facilities and warning signs should be posted.
Stability
1). Caprylic acid is stable at room temperature, but may decompose at high temperatures (above the boiling point of 237°C) or in contact with strong oxidizing agents, releasing irritating fumes (e.g., carbon monoxide). Its aqueous solution is weakly acidic (pH about 3.5) and mixing with alkaline substances should be avoided.
2). Avoid contact with strong oxidizing agents (e.g., potassium permanganate), strong bases (e.g., sodium hydroxide) and metal powders to prevent violent reactions or corrosion. Esterification reaction can occur with alcohols to produce ester fragrances or plasticizers.
3). Unopened caprylic acid can be stored for 12-24 months under normal storage conditions. Use as soon as possible after opening and keep the container tightly closed to prevent moisture absorption or oxidation.
4). Wear protective gloves and goggles when handling to avoid direct skin and eye contact.
