Application
1). Industrial Applications:
Surfactants: used as a raw material in the production of soaps, detergents and lubricants by saponification reaction to produce sodium laurate (strong detergent).
Plastics and rubber: used as plasticizers or processing aids to improve material flexibility.
Biodiesel: Preparation of biodiesel (e.g. methyl laurate) through transesterification reaction.

Antimicrobial agent: used in facial cleansers, shampoos, etc. due to its inhibitory effect on bacteria and fungi.
Emulsifiers: to stabilize emulsions or cream products (e.g. face creams, hair conditioners).

Storage
1). Environmental conditions:
TEMPERATURE: 15-25°C recommended, avoid high temperatures (to prevent melting or oxidation) and extreme low temperatures (to prevent caking).
Humidity: keep dry (relative humidity <50%) and protect from moisture to avoid caking or hydrolysis.
LIGHT: Store away from light to prevent UV-induced oxidation.
2). Packaging Requirements:
Sealed containers: use galvanized steel drums or HDPE plastic drums lined with plastic bags to ensure airtightness.
Inert gas protection: long-term storage can be filled with nitrogen to reduce the risk of oxidation.
3). Safety measures:
Keep away from incompatible substances: separate from strong oxidizing agents (e.g. peroxides) and strong bases.
Fire protection: storage areas need to be ventilated and kept away from sources of ignition (flash point approx. ≥110°C, but caution is still needed).
Stability
1). Chemical stability:
Thermal stability: stable at room temperature, but may decompose into hydrocarbons or carbon dioxide at high temperature (>200°C).
Oxidative stability: as a saturated fatty acid, the antioxidant property is superior to unsaturated acids, but long-term exposure to air may slowly oxidize (rancidity), producing aldehydes and ketones.
2). Storage Stability:
Unopened: shelf life usually 2-3 years, stable in nature when storage conditions are met.
OPENED: It is recommended to use as soon as possible and avoid frequent exposure to air.
3). Reactivity:
Reaction with alkali: generates laurates (e.g. saponification).
Esterification: reacts with alcohols to form esters (industrially used in the preparation of fragrances or plasticizers).
